Why a foam gun is a must-have for every skilled professional

Application conditions can change across the job, and surrounding assemblies can leave parts of the placement area recessed. With the OSI® QUAD® Foam Gun, you can regulate output and guide its 4-inch extension tip past a frame edge or return. Below, we look at when the applicator fits the work and how to keep it ready between uses.

When professional canned-foam work calls for a foam gun

A strawed can handles one isolated bead when the work is open and directly accessible. But the applicator decision changes when you need to reposition and return to the same product in another part of the work.

With a foam gun, like the OSI® QUAD® Foam Gun, attached to the can, you can pick up the same applicator as you move from one bead to the next. That makes the gun useful when application continues across an assembly or through more of the job.

A strawed can is still practical for limited use, but a reusable foam gun fits work where the applicator will stay in service after the first placement.

For storage up to 30 days, keep a partly used pressurized can attached with the rear control fully closed, and follow the attached product’s storage-position directions. Replace an empty can immediately. If no replacement is ready, clean the gun before the inside foam cures.

How a foam gun lets installers set and check output

The amount of foam you need can change from one bead to the next.

On the OSI® QUAD® Foam Gun, you make that change at the rear control. Turn it clockwise to decrease available flow and counterclockwise to increase it.

The trigger has a separate job. It starts and stops active dispensing within the flow available at the rear control. A test away from the assembly lets you see what the gun is dispensing before you apply the next bead.

Before you move to the assembly, dispense a test bead onto scrap or another disposable surface. The bead shows what the current setting is delivering, which you can compare with what the next pass requires.

If the spray foam gun is dispensing too much or too little, adjust the rear control and test again. When the output suits the work, move the gun to the assembly. 

When the placement area sits behind an obstruction

A frame edge or return can leave part of a window or door shim space recessed behind the face of the opening.

You may see the gap clearly, but the gun body runs out of clearance before the dispensing tip can line up with it.

On the OSI® QUAD® Foam Gun, the 4-inch brass extension tip moves the dispensing point past the frame edge while the gun body stays clear of it.

Check that the tip has a clear path, then guide it into the recessed shim space. For this frame-to-rough-opening gap, use a gun-grade insulation foam made for window and door installations, such as OSI® QUAD® FOAM.

Foam gun storage and cleaning between uses

Before you set the foam gun aside, check whether the attached can is partly used or empty:

  • Partly used can: Keep the foam gun and foam can attached with the rear control fully closed for no more than 30 days. Do not remove the partly used foam can.
  • Empty can: Do not store the gun with an empty can attached. Replace it immediately. If a replacement can of the same product is not going on right away, clean the gun.

During temporary storage, follow the attached product’s directions for can position and any other product-specific storage condition.

Fresh foam at the connection or inside the flow path can still be flushed before it cures. Use OSI® Foam Gun Cleaner for the task. Put on gloves and eye protection before handling the solvent. Work in a well-ventilated area and keep the cleaner away from ignition sources such as sparks or open flame.

Clean the applicator in this order:

  1. Wipe fresh residue from the gun connection.
  2. Attach the cleaner without over-tightening.
  3. Hold the applicator over a disposable container and flush until solvent comes out of the tip. Keep the cleaner can vertical while you do this.
  4. Leave the solvent in the gun for two minutes.
  5. Flush again, repeating as needed until only clear solvent exits the tip.

OSI® Foam Gun Cleaner works on fresh or uncured polyurethane foam. It will not dissolve cured foam. If foam cures inside the flow path, it can block dispensing and may leave the applicator unusable.
