How to properly clean a foam gun and extend its service life

Foam residue restricts flow when it sits where the gun needs a clear path: the tip, coupling, basket adapter, or valve path. If the gun slows down or fights the trigger, check the flow path. Here, we show you how to clean a foam gun while the foam is still fresh, then match the storage routine to the break between jobs.

Foam gun cleaning: why foam gun maintenance protects flow between cans and jobs

A foam gun only helps the job if it feeds cleanly on your next pull.

Residue can sit inside the gun path even when the outside looks clean, so the problem may show up only when you squeeze the trigger again.

On an OSI® QUAD® Foam Gun, maintenance helps you keep that path ready before another can goes on or the tool goes back in the truck.

And here’s the thing: a clean outside does not prove the path is open. You can often trace back flow problems to a few contact points or jobsite conditions that restrict it.

Do not park the gun with an empty can. Replace the can right away, or flush fresh foam from the gun path with OSI® QUAD® Foam Gun Cleaner before storing it.

What causes foam guns to clog or lose flow

Changing cans is a common time for fresh foam to get left at the tip, coupling, or basket adapter.

Residue at the tip or coupling may show up when you pull the trigger again. At the basket adapter, the same leftover foam can restrict flow from the next can right at the connection.

If you leave an empty can on the gun, foam has time to harden in the applicator path and restrict flow. But weak flow does not always mean there is residue in the path.

Cold product may slow the feed. Holding the can out of position or leaving the regulator closed may also make the gun feel clogged.

Those differences matter once the gun starts acting up.

Signs your foam gun needs cleaning

Slow flow or no flow tells you something is off, but it does not pinpoint why the foam gun is not working.

Read the sign with the condition around it:

  • Fresh residue at the connection is a cleaning cue.
  • Spitting or uneven feed can point to setup, not automatically a buildup problem.
  • After a can change, weak flow may still point to setup rather than residue in the path.

But a resisting trigger is different. When it will not move, do not pull harder. If cured product is holding the needle valve, forcing the trigger may damage parts.

When the sign points to fresh foam in the path, clean the gun while that foam will still flush out.

How to clean a foam gun before foam cures inside the path

Use OSI® QUAD® Foam Gun Cleaner while fresh or uncured polyurethane foam can still be flushed from the gun path.

To clean a foam gun at that point, put on PPE, work with ventilation, and set a suitable container for the solvent coming out of the nozzle. Because OSI® QUAD® Foam Gun Cleaner is pressurized and flammable, keep the cleaner can upright.

With the setup ready, run the solvent through the gun in this order:

  1. Clear the connection: If fresh foam is on the coupling or nozzle, remove it so the cleaner seats cleanly and solvent moves through the gun.
  2. Attach the cleaner: Thread the cleaner onto the gun coupling until it is seated. Do not over-tighten it.
  3. Pull solvent through: Pull the trigger until solvent comes from the nozzle. At that point, solvent is moving through the gun, not just sitting at the connection.
  4. Let it sit for two minutes: Release the trigger and let the solvent sit in the gun for two minutes before the next pull.
  5. Flush into the container: Pull the trigger again and run the solvent into the container. If foam residue comes out with it, repeat the two-minute soak and flush.
  6. Stop at clear solvent: Do not stop after one pass if residue is still coming out. Repeat as needed until only clear solvent appears.

Once only clear solvent comes out, you have flushed the fresh residue from the path.

Storage and can-change habits that extend foam gun service life

During can changes and storage, fresh foam can still harden in the applicator path if you leave the gun in the wrong condition.

During can changes

Do not park the gun with an empty can attached.

When you remove an empty can, put the replacement on right away. If no replacement is ready, move straight to foam gun cleaning so fresh foam does not harden inside the applicator path.

Clear the basket adapter before the next can goes on, then thread the new connection without forcing it.

Before storage

How long the gun will sit determines whether you leave a can attached or store the tool clean.

For short-term storage, you may leave a partially used can attached only with the release valve fully closed, and only up to 30 days. But do not store the gun temporarily without a pressurized foam can attached.

If you are putting the tool into longer storage, complete the storage flush, remove the cleaner canister, release pressure, and close the regulator.

Finish by applying petroleum jelly to the nozzle tip and basket before you put the gun away.

Foam gun cleaning FAQ

How often should I clean a foam gun?

Clean the gun when a can comes off and no replacement is ready, before longer storage, or when fresh residue needs to be cleared from the gun path. If you leave a partially used can attached for short-term storage, keep the release valve fully closed and do not leave it attached longer than 30 days.

Why is my foam gun not working after a can change?

After a can change, the problem may be setup, residue, or flow restriction at the connection. Check can position, product temperature, regulator setting, and the basket adapter. If the trigger will not move, do not force it.

When should I use foam gun cleaner?

Use OSI® QUAD® Foam Gun Cleaner while the foam is still fresh or uncured in the gun path. If the trigger is locked up, don’t force it. Check what is holding the trigger or blocking the path, because cleaner is for fresh foam you can still flush through the gun.
