Fire block foam: requirements and best practices for contractors

When you’re looking at a service penetration through framing, foam may seem like the next step. But first, confirm whether the opening is part of a concealed-space fire blocking condition or a rated assembly. In this article, we’ll walk you through where fire block foam fits, where firestopping rules take over, and how to use OSI® Fire Block Foam within its supported fireblocking scope.

What fire blocking requirements are meant to control

A service opening through framing can become more than a gap to seal.

If it connects a stud bay, chase, soffit, or floor/ceiling transition, it can give fire and hot gases a concealed route through the building. Fire blocking is meant to interrupt that route before it carries the hazard beyond the area where it started.

On residential and commercial projects, the exact fire blocking requirements come from the adopted code, approved plans, assembly type, and authority having jurisdiction.

Your first task is to identify the concealed path.

Once you know what space or opening needs to be blocked, you can confirm which approved material the project allows for that condition.

Fire blocking and firestopping are different inspections

A penetration through framing can look like a simple foam condition from the floor. But once you track what the opening passes through, that may change.

Fire blocking closes concealed paths. Firestopping protects rated assemblies.

Before you choose foam, identify the assembly.

Fire blocking addresses openings inside combustible framing and other hidden spaces. Firestopping applies when a penetration passes through a fire-resistance-rated assembly and must follow the listed or tested system for that assembly.

That difference matters on residential and commercial jobs, especially where rated assemblies appear in the plans.

For OSI® Fire Block Foam, use it for fire blocking, not firestopping. Do not use it in hourly fire-rated assemblies that require firestop products, or in Type I through Type IV construction.

Where fire block foam is commonly used

Look first at openings through top plates, bottom plates, wall studs, and floor or ceiling lines.

These are the rough-in locations where service penetrations often leave an open path inside a concealed space. You may see them at plumbing vents, conduit runs, sheathed cable openings, or duct penetrations.

The service type does not decide the material. A cable opening and a duct opening can both need fire blocking, but you still have to read what the opening passes through and what the project allows at that location.

Where foam is allowed, you can use fire block foam to close service penetrations and framing openings inside concealed spaces.

These locations tell you where to look, not what to install automatically. The material still has to match the opening in front of you.

Confirm the assembly before choosing a fire block foam

An opening can look ready for foam. Pull the plan details before you make the material call.

Start with the material check

Confirm whether the plans allow a fire-blocking material at that penetration or require a listed firestop system. Review the adopted code, approved documents, and AHJ direction, then match the material to the requirements they establish.

For crews, the useful fire safety tip is this: the material check comes first. Everything that follows assumes you got it right.

The penetration shape and product label do not make the material call. Base that decision on the plan detail, assembly, and local requirements.

When OSI® Fire Block Foam fits

When that check confirms polyurethane foam is allowed for the fire blocking condition, this is what OSI® Fire Block Foam is built for.

It is a single-component, low-pressure, minimal-expanding polyurethane fire block foam for concealed service penetrations in Type V-A, occupancy group R3 and R5 wood-frame buildings. The product is tested to UL 723/ASTM E84 and modified ASTM E814, and conforms to IRC and IBC fire blocking requirements.

Because it is polyurethane foam, confirm local acceptance where local codes restrict polyurethane foams as fireblocks. Use OSI® Fire Block Foam only where the project requirement matches that scope.

With product fit confirmed, installation has to preserve the fire blocking work.

Best practices for fire block spray foam installation

When you work with OSI® Fire Block Foam, keep the installation inside its product limits:

  • Prep the opening. Work on clean, workable surfaces and confirm the gap before applying foam.
  • Check the gap range. OSI® Fire Block Foam is for gaps from 1/4 inch to 1-1/2 inches. If the opening falls outside that range, do not try to bridge it with this foam.
  • Fill the gap. Apply the foam into the gap, not just across the face of the opening.
  • Respect the cure timing. The foam is tack-free in approximately eight to 10 minutes and cures in about 24 hours, depending on conditions.
  • Leave the cured foam intact. Cutting or damage compromises the fire-blocking capability.
  • Protect exposed foam. Use approved facings where foam remains exposed, and keep it away from high-heat contact.
  • Clean while uncured. Do this immediately with OSI Foam Gun Cleaner before it cures. Cured foam is difficult to remove.

Fire blocking work starts with the path you need to interrupt, then moves through the assembly, material requirements, and product fit.

Use OSI® Fire Block Foam where that sequence supports it. When the condition is unclear, get product guidance before the install rather than forcing foam into the wrong opening.

FAQs on fire block foam

Can I use fire block foam as a firestop?

No. Fire block foam is for approved fire blocking conditions. Penetrations in rated assemblies require the listed or tested firestop system for that assembly.

What is the difference between fire block spray foam and regular foam?

Fire block spray foam is intended for approved fire blocking conditions where foam is allowed by the assembly and product instructions. Regular expanding foam may fill gaps, but that does not make it acceptable for fire blocking. Match the foam to the project requirement and product directions.

Can I trim cured fire block spray foam?

No. Do not trim cured OSI® Fire Block Foam. Cutting or damaging cured foam compromises the fire-blocking capability.
