On a service call, your first read is the water path: through the run, over the front edge, behind the trough, or out through a joint.

Jeff Dalpiaz, Roof and Gutter Category Manager, ACA NA, gives OSI’s working cutoff for when sealant belongs in a gutter repair: “Sealant would come into play for small, isolated leaks at joints as long as the gutter is still firm and properly sloped.”
You can treat a seam, end cap, outlet, or small crack as sealant work only after the run drains and the joint is not opening from loose support or distorted metal.
If water holds in the run, start with pitch correction. If hangers or fasteners are loose, or a seam or outlet has shifted while the trough remains serviceable, reset the mechanics before you consider gutter sealant.
Large gaps, visible corrosion, failing fascia, or gutter placement that sends water behind the trough put you outside sealant-only work. After a repair qualifies for sealing, your gutter sealant choice has to match the joint.
At a qualified seam, you want to match the sealant to the gutter material and the movement the cured seal has to tolerate. For aluminum, galvanized, and vinyl gutters or downspouts, OSI Gutter GS121 Clear fits seam joints and cracks in gutter troughs.
That matters where the seam sees water in the trough and movement from temperature changes. OSI Gutter GS121 cures to a tough, rubbery gasket, stays permanently flexible, forms a water-resistant seal, and expands and contracts as the gutter moves. On a gutter seam, that weather resistance has a practical job: to resist water in the trough and stay flexible as temperature changes move the gutter.
If the gutter is copper, OSI Gutter GS121 is outside the product fit. Also, do not apply it over rubber, silicone, or petroleum-based seals such as butyl rubber. If you remove old sealant and expose aluminum, galvanized metal, or vinyl, continue with the surface-prep check.
For other gutter materials, verify current product data before selecting the sealant.
When the material and joint fit, your next read is the surface. Sealant needs clean contact with the gutter material so it has a surface to hold.
Clean enough means no chalking on aluminum, no old sealant residue, no asphalt shingle residue, and no dust, debris, grease, or other contaminants left in the joint. If you removed old sealant, keep cleaning until the residue is gone and the joint is back to clean gutter material.
Dry enough means dry to the touch, with no trapped moisture in the seam. Cold metal can carry morning condensation even when the trough looks dry.
You want to be careful here because residue and moisture reduce contact between the gutter sealant and the seam, which compromises adhesion.
After surface prep, run a bead with enough volume to keep the gutter sealant in contact as the joint moves. A gutter seam moves with temperature change, water load, and connection stress. A thin bead lacks the sealant volume and contact area it needs to move with the joint.
Run the bead inside the gutter at seams, joints, end caps, and outlet connections. Keep it continuous. For an end cap, run OSI Gutter GS121 sealant around the edge before you set the cap, or run it along the inside joint after the cap is in place. Either way, you want the seal to cover the path water would use.
Cut the nozzle at 45 degrees to set the bead size, then target a 3/8-inch bead. Apply steady pressure and force the sealant into the joint. If the joint is deeper than 3/8 inch, use backing material so the bead keeps the right depth and contact.
OSI Gutter GS121 self-levels, so do not tool or flatten the bead for appearance. If the bead needs minor direction across the seam path, do not reduce its volume or pull it away from the joint.
An outside bead alone misses the seam path. Run the bead inside the joint path as well, where it can block the path water would use. Water can still sit inside the seam, and an exterior-only bead takes more direct exposure.
Before you leave the repair to cure, separate the application window from the cure window. OSI Gutter GS121 applies between 40°F and 120°F. When the job sits near the low end of that range, store the cartridge at room temperature for at least 24 hours before use so it extrudes more easily.
James Vagase, Sr. Category Manager, ACA Silicones, gives OSI’s cure-timing reminder for this repair: a skinned bead is still an uncured bead. At 72°F and 70% relative humidity, OSI Gutter GS121 can skin in about 30 minutes. Full cure takes 7 to 14 days. Cold weather, high humidity, and deeper beads add time.
Close the service call with that timing in view. Leave the bead alone while curing develops, and keep tools or jobsite contact off it. Do not wet the uncured bead to prove the repair before the gutter sealant has had time to cure. If water appears after the next weather event, do not assume the bead failed. Recheck the original diagnosis: overflow, water behind the trough, pitch, and the seam itself.
